How Do I Improve My Voice?

  • Sing at home, replacing the words of a song with Ah or Oh. This will get the voice to open up and get comfortable. Later on, add the words.
  • Practice singing the Psalms during your daily devotion with the Lord. Keep it simple and do it often. This will help to strengthen your confidence in public.
  • Find a vocal teacher who will give you one initial lesson to learn what main trouble areas you need to work on. Usually, it involves breathing or tension. Ask the vocal teacher for exercises that will help your problem areas. You could come back to the teacher once every three months (or monthly if you have the time) to have them check on your progress.
  • Get the Complete Warm-up CD from the Vocal Coach website. (www.vocalcoach.com) Use the CD for 20 to 30 minutes a day, minimum, if you want to see progress in your voice. After using this CD, there are others to choose from at this website.
  • Take a voice class or some applied voice lessons through a community college for a semester. Getting an honest and unbiased assessment on ways to improve your voice will be a blessing to you and to others that you serve. It is typically beneficial to have someone else bring instruction and observation for 30 minutes a week then you can go home and practice daily with warm-ups and using good body alignment (posture). You will also learn some basic skills such as deep breathing, breath support, breath control, projection and vowel placement and resonance.
  • Having a basic knowledge of vocal technique can help you sing louder, easier and longer. Also, it will make it a more pleasant experience for those singing around you. It is shortsighted to think that it doesn’t make a difference in how a person sings. It is equally foolish to think that worshiping God in spirit and in truth depends on it.
